What is this format?
GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format. Each frame uses a palette of no more than 256 colors and lossless LZW compression. Converting a full-color source into that palette can still discard visible color detail before the lossless encoding step.
A GIF can contain multiple frames, timing values and looping instructions. Transparency is either fully on or off for a palette entry; it does not provide the smooth alpha channel available in PNG, WebP or AVIF.

Is GIF compression lossless?
LZW preserves the palette values that are encoded. Reducing a full-color image to a palette of at most 256 colors can still introduce visible loss first.
Can a GIF have a transparent background?
Yes, but transparency is binary. A pixel is transparent or opaque, with no semi-transparent edges like those available in PNG.
When is video better than animated GIF?
For longer, larger or colorful motion, MP4 and WebM normally produce much smaller files with better visual quality.
